The Umaid Bhawan Palace was formerly Maharaja Umaid Singh's Palace. This heritage hotel is one of the largest and most impressive and perhaps the grandest private residences in the Indian state of Rajasthan. This palace hotel was built between the years 1929 and 1942.

The architecture of the Umaid Bhawan Palace hotel in Jodhpur is an example of the Indo-Colonial and the art-deco style of the thirties. This impressive building is built of white marble and pink sandstone. The art and deco on the walls of the building speaks volumes about the artistic skills of the Rajasthani master craftsmen. The intricate carvings reflect the luxurious taste of the Rajasthani royalty. The walls are adorned with paintings depicting scenes from the Indian epic Ramayana, painted by a Polish painter.
The interesting thing about this palace is the fact that it was built at a time when India gained independence and paradoxically the government of independent India abolished royal titles and the privy purse of the royalty. At present Maharaja Gaj Singh II lives in a wing of the palace and the rest of the building has been converted into a heritage hotel and is consequently used for twin purposes, firstly the present Maharaja can maintain his ancestral home by generating revenue and secondly tourists get an opportunity to get a glimpse of the lifestyle of the Rajasthani royalty. The guests are treated with warmth and are made to feel as though they are a part of the royalty.
This palace hotel in Jodhpur has a private cinema hall, fancy ballrooms, a durbar hall, a billiards room, banquet halls, libraries, a soaring rotunda with staff quarters and servant quarters.
