Heritage and palace hotels in India are those hotels, which at some point of time in history were fortresses, mansions and castles that were home to the royalty of the various states of India. Those who run and maintain these heritage and palace hotels have made sure that the traditional work, carvings, décor and the style of hospitality remain as it were in the olden times. During the post independence period the Government of India abolished royal titles and the concept of feudal lords and feudal ownership of lands and withdrew the Privy Purse and special privileges to the royalty. Consequently, members of most of the royal families found it extremely difficult to maintain these huge buildings, heritage homes and mansions. Some of these ancient homes were converted into heritage and palace hotels.
Renowned hotel chains have taken up the management of some of these hotels. The states of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala among others have a number of heritage hotels.
